Dear Friends and Family,

We hope that you are well. We are enjoying the cooler temperatures and remind ourselves that this is the time of year that we need to get outside! Christmas was a nice time away with family, but we are thankful to be home and back to a more regular schedule. Macey continues to love school and Eden is officially a walker.

We continue to be blessed in the work to which God has called us and look forward to the opportunities that we have this year. Andi is a part of a task force working to bring childcare to our office so that moms can be involved more in Campus Crusade-related ministry. It’s an endeavor that is quite complicated and over our heads, but we are thankful for the opportunity to trust with God with something that is bigger than ourselves. We also have a student weekend coming up where those involved will seek the Lord about serving Him at our HQ. Scott’s team has some of it’s members in Africa right now doing a couple of trainings.

Thank you so much for your love and support of us and our work.

Dear Friends and Family,

We had a great trip to Bangkok and have been back for about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, we have been battling sickness since we’ve been back— we’ve all had the flu plus Eden with the croup and an ear infection. We hoping we’re over everything. Please pray for our health?

We are thankful to be back home now to enjoy the cooler temperatures and holiday cheer.

Foods that Terrified Me : Thai Edition!

Last Friday, Scott and I returned from Bangkok, Thailand after about 2 weeks there. We were there for MinistryNet, a CCC conference. We also spend a few days afterwards to see the sites. We spent a lot of time with our friends, Steve and Cheryl.

It seemed that every 5 minutes that Cheryl was bumping into some sort “terrifying” Thai food. And since we were at a conference, we were around a LOT of food;-) She blogged about “Foods that Terrified Me” at thebrattonbunch.blogspot.com.

I thought that it would be fun to piggy back off of Cheryl’s post to add some additional photos of “terrifying food.” So, here it goes…

I have never seen a bag of chips this big, let alone a bag this big of SQUID chips!

We went to a festival with lots of food vendors. I called this one the “Survivor Booth.”

I saw these chickens at another booth and thought that they must be fake, but our Thai tour liaison told me that there’s no way that these vendors would have fake food in their booths.

And here it is…. Durian! It’s just about as scary on the inside as it is on the outside. The yellow oval in the middle of the photos is the middle of the Durian. It seems to be a cross between a pineapple and a pumpkin texture-wise on the inside. I didnt taste any. I saw an advisory at the airport check-in about people wanting to take Durian on-board with them.

Ok, so maybe it’s not exactly Thai food, but I ate it a Thai mall, so that makes it Thai, right? And not only did it taste good, but the price was right– less than $3USD!

So we thought that this was someone making pasta, but found out that this is cotton candy made from honey. Could it be??? Healthy cotton candy?

And just in case anyone wants to see what happens if you try to feed Cheryl something that terrifies her….in other words just don’ do it! Love ya, Cheryl;-)

Hi Friends! I decided to jump on the bandwagon and try out blogging. I used to have a blog several years ago before blogging really got big. It served more as a journal and a place where I could write out what I was learning. I plan for this blog to be more of “fun” blog with family photos, etc. My biggest concern about blogging is staying motivated to post. I am certainly not normally with a lack of things to talk about. Kids keep life interesting and fun! I have done a terrible job of recording all of the humorous things that Macey has said in her 4 years. I am hoping that this blog will be a place to keep better track of all that she and Eden say and do.

MinistryNet 2011 Bangkok

Dear Friends and Family,

It’s official! We’re heading to Bangkok on Saturday even with the threat of flooding. Here are the reasons that we have decided to proceed with MinistryNet:

The local Thai staff and crisis management team feel that our part of town is safe, and they have promised to take care of any needs that might arise while we are in Bangkok. They are truly amazing and want to bless us with Thai hospitality even in the middle of an enormous crisis for them. They still feel it is safe. And again, the head of the crisis management team and National Director live very close to our hotel location.
It has not rained in Bangkok over the last 4 days, and water level still is down in our area.
The hotel not only has food and water stockpiled, but should the hotel get flooded, they have said they will relocate us to another hotel an hour south of our location where there is no threat of flood. They have also agreed that if we suddenly needed to evacuate to the airport that they would bus us to the airport elevated train system, provided the water doesn’t reach over 50 cm (roughly 20 inches)
Our leadership including our president have given us their blessing to go. They feel that the urgency of mission outweighs some of the risks of going as opposed to postponing until a later time. We all know that 4 months in the digital world is like 10 years in the face to face world.

So, like any international trip, there is a risk. However, we still feel the risk is acceptable at this point, and we do have a plan if things get more difficult than expected while we are there. We are not afraid to cancel at the last minute, if necessary. There is a high tide expected this weekend in Bangkok, and we will be monitoring that closely. However, if our hotel and surrounding area escapes any flooding during that high tide that will give us even more confidence that we should stay dry while we are in Bangkok.

Let us continue to be in prayer for the outcomes of our conference as well as for the victims of the flood. Please pray for those who have lost loved ones. At this point, all of our Thai staff members are accounted for, but some have lost their homes and property. During the conference we will be addressing ways of how we can help.

We consider Isaiah 43:1-7 as the Lord speaking to us for Ministrynet. It is amazing how the situation in Thailand right now has garnered more prayer for this conference than we ever could have imagined. We expected that some of our conferees might suddenly decide not to attend, but instead we are seeing more people sign up! I addition our Thai staff have requested inflatable rafts to help them in their outreach. We have purchased 7 of these rafts and will be transporting them as we go.

We appreciate your prayers for us the ~175 other people who are involved in MinistryNet and that the Lord uses our time together to further His kingdom!

African Staff use Technology to Reach the World

We hope that things are well with you. We are back into the swing of things in Orlando with Macey in preschool and us being on more of a regular routine. She is loving Mrs. Becwar’s class!

In other news we are getting ready to go to Thailand at the end of October for a technology conference. Andi has been working on several things in preparation for our time there. Scott will be working with the technical aspects of running the conference once we’re in-country. Would you pray right now for our housing situation? The hotel needs to replace some beds and there is a concern that there might not be enough twins beds to meet our need. Thank you!

Summer In The Mountains

Greetings from Orlando! We are back home after about 8 weeks away in Colorado. We are thankful to be under our own roof again. The summer was very full with our work with New Staff Training, Andi’s classes, and our biennial staff conference. We also experienced the loss of Andi’s grandmother, Grandma Dot. We are therefore thankful that the past couple of weeks have been a little less hectic.

We are about to enter a new stage for our family— school! Macey will begin preschool on September 6. We are thankful that she has a spot in a preschool that takes place in a church just a mile from our home. Another nice feature is that the state pays for her schooling since she is four years old and in the voluntary pre-kindergarten program (VPK)! We appreciate your prayers that we will all adjust well (especially Macey) and that we will all stay healthy.

WordCamp San Francisco Conference

Several of us are attending the WordPress conference called WordCamp San Francisco. http://2011.sf.wordcamp.org/

Our GCX2.org is currently hosting hundreds of websites. We are continuing to make this website development tool easy to use and flexible for a wide variety of applications. This conference is helping us to broaden our vision and skills.

One day of the conference was focused on large scale implementations. This was a good match for CCCI and what we are doing and our vision. Many websites using WordPress are solely content management systems. CNN and New York Times obviously high content and at times has had over 1 million visits per day. Some newspapers are using WP as their CMS and publishing from there to web and to print.

Dear Friends and Family,

Greetings from Orlando! We are so thankful to be home! We have adjusted well to being back in town, but have struggled to stay healthy.

We have been encouraged to reunite with our ministry teams and are preparing for our next adventure. We will leave for Ft. Collins, CO on June 9. We appreciate your prayers for all that is involved with our New Staff Training. 220 new laborers are expected to join our ministry this summer!!
